Basic Bread Pudding Recipe

This is a delicious, yet basic bread pudding recipe. I first made it when I had some left over homemade sourdough bread.

This classic bread pudding came out so nice and tasty that I made a second batch since the first one was devoured in one night!

But please, don't you take my word for it. Make a batch of this simple bread pudding recipe and tell me what you think.

So how do you make bread pudding at home?

Very easily. You just follow the instructions and you'll have this yummy dessert on the table in one hour or less. Topped with a simple sauce it is wonderful and so easy! Moreover, it smells heavenly to boot.

You have a choice of including some raisins or not. I did not for some in my family do not like raisin bread pudding.

Note: If I did use raisins however, I would soak them first before incorporating them into the bread pudding. I would soak them in some hot water to which I would add some vanilla extract and/or some rum or brandy.

Basic Bread Pudding Recipe


Ingredients for Basic Bread Pudding Recipe

In order to make this simple and classic bread pudding you will need:


  • 6 cups of bread - cut up into small chunks
  • 4 cups of whole milk or a mixture of milk and half and half
  • 1 stick - 1/2 cup - of butter
  • 1 1/3 cups of light brown sugar lightly packed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 4 teaspoons of powdered cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of powdered nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of powdered cloves
  • 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of raisins - optional


Method for Making Bread Pudding

  1. In a saucepan on medium to high heat, warm up the milk, butter and spices.
  2. In another container - I used my stand mixer - mix the eggs and the sugar until frothy.
  3. When the milk is very hot and almost boiling, add some of the hot milk into the egg mixture and mix very well. Return the milk-egg mixture to the saucepan and heat through.
  4. In the meantime, grease a 13" x 9" pan and place the bread chunks into it. Pour the hot milk mixture on top and let sit for 20 minutes.
  5. Bake at 350 degree for 45 to 50 minutes.
  6. While the bread pudding is still hot, pour the sauce on top. The sauce recipe follows below.
  7. Eat while still warm - or cold.


Basic Bread Pudding Recipe: The Sauce

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1/3 cup of white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract or rum - you can even do half vanilla and half rum
  • 1 tablespoon of all-purpose unbleached flour

In a saucepan mix all the ingredients together and place on medium-high heat. Mix the whole time until the sauce thickens.

Pour over the warm bread pudding.
